Outstanding comedy series? 'Ted Lasso'

After Mike White's wins in the writing and directing categories, the whole show won. Season Two is on the way.

"Succession" takes the Emmy for best writing for a drama series. Armstrong said he wanted to say "one thing about writing."

"It didn't always feel good when I was writing it ... it felt wrong. Just because things feel bad doesn't mean they're right or good. They're often bad. But to my fellow writers out there. If you're blind to all the merits ... there it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. It could just mean you're a proper writer," he said.

MJ Delaney won the the Emmy for directing a comedy series, following up Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein's acting wins.

Hwang Dong-hyuk won for best directing for a drama, beating out "Ozark" and "Succession."

In his speech, he called out how "Squid Game," a South Korean show, made history at the Emmys.

"Since Squid Game got 14 nominations in the Emmys, people keep saying we made history ... but it was you who opened the doors. We made history together," he said. "I truly hope 'Squid Game' won't be the last non English series to be at the Emmys and I hope this won't be my last Emmy either.

Brunson is the star and creator of the ABC comedy, which has already racked up seven awards. Sheryl Lee Ralph won an acting award earlier tonight.

She thanked her family and the people who got her to this point —and her "wonderful husband because he's the most supportive man (she's) ever known."

While presenting, the "Law and Order: SVU" co-stars jokingly poked fun at their characters' known sexual tension and leaned in for a kiss —before pulling away.

The "Ted Lasso" creator also won an award for starring in the feel-good Apple TV+ show. He plays an American who coaches a soccer team in the U.K. He thanked his parents, the cast, the viewers and more.

Comedy duo Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, known for the Nickelodeon comedy "Kenan & Kel" and the movie "Good Burger," had a surprise, brief reunion during the Emmys.

Mike White won a directing and writing Emmy for "The White Lotus."

He began his first speech by thanking his parents. "My mom let me win the weird kid that I wanted to be, and my dad who is struggling right now. Thank you for letting me honor him right now," White said.

He also thanked his friends Molly Shannon and Jennifer Coolidge for inspiring him to write this.

For his second speech, he said, "I just want to stay in the game. Don't vote me off the island," invoking his time on "Survivor."

The infamous lethal doll from "Squid Game" made an appearance at the Emmys.

"Good luck to anyone making it past the doll," Jung Ho-yeon said, turning the show's grim premise into a joke.

"The winner may turn out to be a loser," Lee Jung-jae added.

Sarah Paulson and Shonda Rhimes awarded actor Geena Davis with the Governors Award, an honorary Emmy that recognizes “an individual, company, or organization that has made a profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television.”

The award specifically recognized Davis' work in the area of media and inclusion. She founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media in 2004, which works to change how women are portrayed on screen. "We need to make sure women can see women doing things," Davis said in a video that played while introducing her award.

Amanda Seyfried played disgraced Theranos founder in the Hulu show "The Dropout." She gave a tearful speech, thanking Liz Meriwether for creating the show.

She has the G, now she has the E. Lizzo's show, "Watch Out For The Big Grrrls," took home the honor for outstanding competition show.

"I'm very emotional," Lizzo said through tears. "The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me."

"When I was a little girl, all I wanted was to see someone like me in the media. Someone Black like me, fat like me, beautiful like me. If I could tell little Lizzo something, it'd be, 'You're gonna see that person, but b--- it's gonna have to be you,'" she said.

Jackée Harry won an Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy series for the NBC show '227' in 1987 and 1988.

She took to Twitter to congratulate Sheryl Lee Ralph for joining her in the category. "Winning my Emmy was a career highlight, but it was also a lonely experience. For 35 years I’ve been the only black woman to win Outstanding Supporting Actresses in a Comedy Series. But that all changes tonight… and it’s come full circle!" Harry wrote.

Harry added that Ralph was originally supposed to be cast in "227."

Coolidge won best supporting actress in a limited series for "White Lotus."

Her speech was zany. "I just want to say I took a lavender bath tonight right before the show and it made me swell up inside my dress and I'm having a hard time speaking. This is so thrilling," Coolidge said.

While unfolding her notes she cursed, and was bleeped out. "Hold on! This is a once in a lifetime thing, and I'm full, I'm full!" she said, as the music rolled her off. "Wait, hold on!"

Then she started dancing to the instrumental version of "Hit the Road, Jack" signing her off.

The HBO show picked up the award for best variety talk series.

"It's a thrill to be here," Oliver said. "its a thrill to meet Steve Martin and Martin Short in the weirdest possible way," he continued, referring to the "Only Murders in the Building" presenters.

Creator Lorne Michaels reflected on the pandemic in his speech. "It was really tough doing shows," Michaels said.

Still, he shares they persisted. "There was something in the DNA of the show when it's 11:30 on a Saturday, we show up. I want to thank them all for showing up," he said.

Brett Goldstein plays the big-hearted, foul-mouthed Roy Kent in the Apple TV+ hit series "Ted Lasso." He won an Emmy for outstanding actor in a comedy series.

"The last time I was here I was told not to swear and I did, and it was cut ... so thank you for this second chance," Goldstein said, before going on to swear — again — while delivering a special message to his family back home in the U.K.

Sofia Vergara and Angela Bassett rocked another red carpet trend at this year's Emmys: Canary yellow gowns.

"Saturday Night Live" star Kenan Thompson opened up the show by making jokes about — what else? — TV.

"If it wasn't for TV, what would we do in our free time? Read books?" Thompson said. "TV is all we have — from 'Netflix and chill' to 'Paramount Plus and eating alone.'"

From there, the monologue kicked into musical gear, invoking some of the most famous TV song theme songs, like "Friends" (and then a remix of the "Friends" song), "The Brady Bunch," "Law and Order: SVU," "Stranger Things," and more — all with choreographed components. During the "Game of Thrones" portion, Thompson went full Valyrian, wearing the classic blond hair.

Our conclusion? Thompson can dance.

"Insecure" and "Raps--t" creator —and TODAY cover star —Issa Rae wore a monochrome Sergio Hudson gown to the red carpet. Speaking to TODAY earlier this year, Rae detailed everything she's up to now that "Insecure" ended, including launching two production companies and appearing in the new "Barbie" movie.

The best part? The "Euphoria" star's dress also has pockets.

Teigen and her husband John Legend are expecting their third child together.

“The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again,” Teigen captioned an Instagram post last month announcing the pregnancy. The announcement comes two years after Teigen announced atragic pregnancy loss.

Seth Rogen and Andrew Garfield wore monochrome, bright white outfits to the Emmys. As for whether they coordinated the moment? That remains to be seen.

Julia Garner received nominations for her work in "Inventing Anna" and the final season of "Ozark."

Garner said she studied con artist Anna Delvey's unique accent before filming the Netflix show. “I wouldn’t allow myself to just go on screen and do a half accent. I’m a perfectionist,” Garner said in aninterview.

Speaking to Laverne Cox, Lynskey said the second episode of Season 2 of "Yellowjackets," currently in progress, is "wild" and "insane."

During this brief break from filming, she said she feels "sexy" in her Christian Siriano dress.

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder of "Hacks" are both up for acting awards, following the show's second season.Smart took home an Emmy last year for Hacks. She plays comedian Deborah Vance in the HBO Max show.

Quinta Brunson, "Abbott Elementary" star and creator, came to the red carpet in a copper Dolce & Gabbana gown. "Abbott Elementary" is up for best comedy, and Brunson is up for outstanding actress in a comedy, as well as writing awards.

Speaking to TODAY earlier this year, the 32-year-old said she was inspired by her mom's career as an elementary school teacher while writing the show. In fact, direct anecdotes made it onto the screen.

“One of her stories I used in the pilot actually, of another teacher punching a kid,” Brunson told TODAY. “She has so many tidbits here and there that I kind of pull from. It’s just stuck in my brain — everything that she’s told me over the years and everything I’ve witnessed because I was with her so much at school.”

Kerry Washington rocked an ivory mini dress with a long train to the 2022 Emmys. She attended the red carpet with Emayatzy Corinealdi, the star of the new show she's producing, "Reasonable Doubt."

"Squid Game's" stars are posing together on the red carpet, looking altogether much calmer than they did in Netflix’s high-wire hit of a show.

Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su stood side-by-side, smiling. OhIl-nam, the elderly participant in the deathly competition hiding a secret.

Meanwhile, "Squid Game" star LeeJung Jaecame to the red carpet with girlfriendLim Se Ryung.

Lily James paired her brass Versace dress with hair the color of fall leaves. James is up for lead actress in a limited anthology series or movie for "Pam & Tommy."

The "Law and Order: SVU" stars appeared on the red carpet together at this year's Emmys. It wasn't the first time –but it was the first time in a while.

They last appeared on the red carpet together in 2010, presenting the award for outstanding writing for a drama series.

Jung Ho-yeon earned an acting Emmy nomination for her work as Kang Sae-byeok in "Squid Game."

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham said that she thinks the show's upcoming season — which they are currently filming — could be its last one. “(Filming it) saddens me a bit, because I think it could be the last one,” she said. “I don’t want this to ever end.”

But she is having fun on the red carpet. Waddingham is wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress — worn precisely so that she wouldn't have to wear heels.

“I feel like we’ve got the inside scoop,” she told E!'s Loni Love, who also isn't wearing heels.

Domingo is walking on the red carpet, victorious. The actor won his first Emmy for his guest role in "Euphoria" during the Creative Arts Emmyson Sept. 4, per Deadline.

"Abbott Elementary" star Sheryl Lee Ralph is up for outstanding supporting actress in the Quinta Brunson-created, elementary school-set show "Abbott Elementary."

After nominations were announced, Ralph's son, Etienne Maurice, tweeted out a video of her reacting to the news.

"RuPaul's Drag Race" has won 24 Emmys since it premiered in 2019, with Season 15 around the corner.

Creator RuPaul Charles and judge Michelle Visage arrived at the Emmys together. Speaking to TODAY, Visage spoke about her judging philosophy.

“It’s how I parent. It’s how I am as a mother. It’s how I am as a friend,” she told TODAY. “It’s how my mother from Brooklyn was with me. I only know New York tough love because the world is not a nice place. The world is not going to cushion it. It’s not going to soften the blow. So I give the critiques the same way my mother would have given to me, the same way (I give them) to my kids. There are times in real life where my husband says I should say that a little nicer. And it’s like, no because life isn’t nice. So I try to be as nice as I can, but I want to be real.”

The duo previously attended the 2019 Golden Globes together. Stiller shares Ella, 19, as well as son Quinlin, 16, with wife Christine Taylor.

Laverne Cox, who is giving interviews at the E! red carpet, wore a structured Jean Paul Gaultier couture outfit.

Speaking to Loni Love on the E! red carpet, Britton share that former president Barack Obama was one starstruck — by her.

“I hear Barack Obama did a little fan-boying with you,” Love said. “Did you know that he was fan-girling or boying over you?’

"When I was meeting him for the first time it's going to be like, hi, bye, onto the next. He was like, 'I really like you in 'Friday Night Lights,'" and I just about his the floor," Britton, who plays Tami Taylor on the beloved football drama, said. "I was like, 'Forget it!' That was a big moment."

Some of this year's buzziest nominees have already taken home Emmys at the Creative ArtsEmmys ceremony on Sept. 4, per Deadline. Here are a few of the awards they've already won.

'Succession': 1 win so far

It'll be a long night for the family drama. Last week, HBOs "Succession" won in the outstanding casting category. Multiple actors are up for awards tonight, including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin.

'The White Lotus': 5 wins so far

"The White Lotus" won five awards, including ones for its theme music and casting.

'Squid Game': 4 wins so far

The breakout Netflix hit already won four awards, including outstanding guest actress: Lee You-mi won for her performance as a North Korean refugee participating in the fight to the death.

'Stranger Things': 5 wins so far

“Stranger Things” has already cleaned up five production wins in categories like outstanding prosthetic makeup and outstanding stunt coordination for a drama series.

'Euphoria': 5 wins so far

Of course, fans are fired up to see if Zendaya wins Best Lead Actress in a Drama series. But the school drama has already won five of its 16 nominations, including outstanding guest actor (Colman Domingo) and outstanding contemporary makeup.

Kenan Thompson was announced as this year's Emmys host back in August. In September, he stopped by TODAY to talk about how he's preparing for the role and combatting any jitters.

"How do you get reay for the Emmys?" Hoda asked.

"A lot of phone calls," Thompson said, laughing. He said the preparation stage involves writing jokes and phone calls with the "famous folks" to figure out who is available to appear in sketches.

Among the "unconfirmed" guests Thompson named? Lizzo, Kumail Nanjiani, and "Ted Lasso's" Jason Sudeikis. Stay tuned.

The always star-studded awards show is not disappointing with bringing the big names tonight.
