"Succession" takes the Emmy for best writing for a drama series. Armstrong said he wanted to say "one thing about writing."
"It didn't always feel good when I was writing it ... it felt wrong. Just because things feel bad doesn't mean they're right or good. They're often bad. But to my fellow writers out there. If you're blind to all the merits ... there it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. It could just mean you're a proper writer," he said.
'Ted Lasso' director MJ Delaney wins

MJ Delaney won the the Emmy for directing a comedy series, following up Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein's acting wins.
'Squid Game' director Hwang Dong-hyuk wins

Hwang Dong-hyuk won for best directing for a drama, beating out "Ozark" and "Succession."
In his speech, he called out how "Squid Game," a South Korean show, made history at the Emmys.
"Since Squid Game got 14 nominations in the Emmys, people keep saying we made history ... but it was you who opened the doors. We made history together," he said. "I truly hope 'Squid Game' won't be the last non English series to be at the Emmys and I hope this won't be my last Emmy either.
Quinta Brunson wins a writing award for 'Abbott Elementary'

Brunson is the star and creator of the ABC comedy, which has already racked up seven awards. Sheryl Lee Ralph won an acting award earlier tonight.
She thanked her family and the people who got her to this point —and her "wonderful husband because he's the most supportive man (she's) ever known."

Jason Sudeikis wins acting award for 'Ted Lasso'

The "Ted Lasso" creator also won an award for starring in the feel-good Apple TV+ show. He plays an American who coaches a soccer team in the U.K. He thanked his parents, the cast, the viewers and more.
Kenan and Kel reunite

Comedy duo Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, known for the Nickelodeon comedy "Kenan & Kel" and the movie "Good Burger," had a surprise, brief reunion during the Emmys.
Mike White wins for directing and writing 'The White Lotus'

Mike White won a directing and writing Emmy for "The White Lotus."
He began his first speech by thanking his parents. "My mom let me win the weird kid that I wanted to be, and my dad who is struggling right now. Thank you for letting me honor him right now," White said.
He also thanked his friends Molly Shannon and Jennifer Coolidge for inspiring him to write this.
For his second speech, he said, "I just want to stay in the game. Don't vote me off the island," invoking his time on "Survivor."
'Squid Game' doll makes an appearance

The infamous lethal doll from "Squid Game" made an appearance at the Emmys.
"Good luck to anyone making it past the doll," Jung Ho-yeon said, turning the show's grim premise into a joke.
"The winner may turn out to be a loser," Lee Jung-jae added.
Geena Davis is given the Governor's Award

Sarah Paulson and Shonda Rhimes awarded actor Geena Davis with the Governors Award, an honorary Emmy that recognizes “an individual, company, or organization that has made a profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television.”
The award specifically recognized Davis' work in the area of media and inclusion. She founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media in 2004, which works to change how women are portrayed on screen. "We need to make sure women can see women doing things," Davis said in a video that played while introducing her award.
Amanda Seyfried wins for playing Elizabeth Holmes in 'The Dropout'

Amanda Seyfried played disgraced Theranos founder in the Hulu show "The Dropout." She gave a tearful speech, thanking Liz Meriwether for creating the show.
Lizzo gets one step closer to an EGOT

She has the G, now she has the E. Lizzo's show, "Watch Out For The Big Grrrls," took home the honor for outstanding competition show.
"I'm very emotional," Lizzo said through tears. "The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me."
"When I was a little girl, all I wanted was to see someone like me in the media. Someone Black like me, fat like me, beautiful like me. If I could tell little Lizzo something, it'd be, 'You're gonna see that person, but b--- it's gonna have to be you,'" she said.
Jackée Harry congratulates Sheryl Lee Ralph on becoming 2nd Black actress to win in same category

Jackée Harry won an Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy series for the NBC show '227' in 1987 and 1988.
She took to Twitter to congratulate Sheryl Lee Ralph for joining her in the category. "Winning my Emmy was a career highlight, but it was also a lonely experience. For 35 years I’ve been the only black woman to win Outstanding Supporting Actresses in a Comedy Series. But that all changes tonight… and it’s come full circle!" Harry wrote.
Harry added that Ralph was originally supposed to be cast in "227."
Jennifer Coolidge's renaissance continues with 'White Lotus' win

Coolidge won best supporting actress in a limited series for "White Lotus."
Her speech was zany. "I just want to say I took a lavender bath tonight right before the show and it made me swell up inside my dress and I'm having a hard time speaking. This is so thrilling," Coolidge said.
While unfolding her notes she cursed, and was bleeped out. "Hold on! This is a once in a lifetime thing, and I'm full, I'm full!" she said, as the music rolled her off. "Wait, hold on!"
Then she started dancing to the instrumental version of "Hit the Road, Jack" signing her off.
'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' wins

The HBO show picked up the award for best variety talk series.
"It's a thrill to be here," Oliver said. "its a thrill to meet Steve Martin and Martin Short in the weirdest possible way," he continued, referring to the "Only Murders in the Building" presenters.
'Saturday Night Live' wins best variety sketch series

Creator Lorne Michaels reflected on the pandemic in his speech. "It was really tough doing shows," Michaels said.
Still, he shares they persisted. "There was something in the DNA of the show when it's 11:30 on a Saturday, we show up. I want to thank them all for showing up," he said.
Brett Goldstein wins an Emmy for 'Ted Lasso'

Brett Goldstein plays the big-hearted, foul-mouthed Roy Kent in the Apple TV+ hit series "Ted Lasso." He won an Emmy for outstanding actor in a comedy series.
"The last time I was here I was told not to swear and I did, and it was cut ... so thank you for this second chance," Goldstein said, before going on to swear — again — while delivering a special message to his family back home in the U.K.

"Saturday Night Live" star Kenan Thompson opened up the show by making jokes about — what else? — TV.
"If it wasn't for TV, what would we do in our free time? Read books?" Thompson said. "TV is all we have — from 'Netflix and chill' to 'Paramount Plus and eating alone.'"
From there, the monologue kicked into musical gear, invoking some of the most famous TV song theme songs, like "Friends" (and then a remix of the "Friends" song), "The Brady Bunch," "Law and Order: SVU," "Stranger Things," and more — all with choreographed components. During the "Game of Thrones" portion, Thompson went full Valyrian, wearing the classic blond hair.
Our conclusion? Thompson can dance.

Quinta Brunson, "Abbott Elementary" star and creator, came to the red carpet in a copper Dolce & Gabbana gown. "Abbott Elementary" is up for best comedy, and Brunson is up for outstanding actress in a comedy, as well as writing awards.
Speaking to TODAY earlier this year, the 32-year-old said she was inspired by her mom's career as an elementary school teacher while writing the show. In fact, direct anecdotes made it onto the screen.
“One of her stories I used in the pilot actually, of another teacher punching a kid,” Brunson told TODAY. “She has so many tidbits here and there that I kind of pull from. It’s just stuck in my brain — everything that she’s told me over the years and everything I’ve witnessed because I was with her so much at school.”

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham said that she thinks the show's upcoming season — which they are currently filming — could be its last one. “(Filming it) saddens me a bit, because I think it could be the last one,” she said. “I don’t want this to ever end.”

'Stranger Things': 5 wins so far
“Stranger Things” has already cleaned up five production wins in categories like outstanding prosthetic makeup and outstanding stunt coordination for a drama series.
'Euphoria': 5 wins so far
Of course, fans are fired up to see if Zendaya wins Best Lead Actress in a Drama series. But the school drama has already won five of its 16 nominations, including outstanding guest actor (Colman Domingo) and outstanding contemporary makeup.
How host Kenan Thompson is preparing for the gig

Kenan Thompson was announced as this year's Emmys host back in August. In September, he stopped by TODAY to talk about how he's preparing for the role and combatting any jitters.
"How do you get reay for the Emmys?" Hoda asked.
"A lot of phone calls," Thompson said, laughing. He said the preparation stage involves writing jokes and phone calls with the "famous folks" to figure out who is available to appear in sketches.
Among the "unconfirmed" guests Thompson named? Lizzo, Kumail Nanjiani, and "Ted Lasso's" Jason Sudeikis. Stay tuned.
